Our autumn series of online research seminars will begin soon.

These seminars take place once a month in term time, on Thursdays, at 9am UK time. They are a chance to hear from researchers at the intersection of science, faith, and society, and are open to everyone with an interest in the topic.

Faith, Science and the Future: the World Council of Churches’ struggle for a just, participatory, and sustainable society.

Thursday 17 October. With Dr Sam Robinson, ECLAS, University of York

This seminar will examine the debate around the nature of science, technology, and society at the 1979 World Conference on Faith, Science and the Future, and why it was such an important topic for church leaders at the time.

Faith, Health and Communication.

Thursday 14 November. With Dr Bankole Falade, Research Officer in the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science at LSE.

Bankole was a journalist and newspaper editor in Nigeria before coming to the UK to study psychology, focusing on understanding public perceptions of science and health behaviour. He studied vaccination controversies, and his findings, on the involvement of religious leaders in vaccine revolts across the world, led to further studies on the coexistence of science and religion.

His recent book, an edited collection titled: Health Communication and disease in Africa: beliefs, traditions and stigma, brought together research papers on the coexistence of science and beliefs on the African continent and how these relate with issues such as reproductive health, mental health, HIV/AIDS, malaria, etc.

Faith, Science, and Empire: Sayyid Ahmad Khan’s Mahomedan Commentary on the Holy Bible (1862-65) and the Intersection of Christianity, Islam, and British Imperialism.

Thursday 12 December. With Dr Sarah Qidwai, ECLAS, University of York.
